Texas Voters Overwhelmingly Approve NRA-Backed Proposition 6!

Yesterday, voters exhibited a firm commitment to preserving the Lone Star State's strong outdoor traditions by adopting Proposition 6 with a convincing 81 percent of the vote.  NRA has successfully spearheaded constitutional right to hunt and fish efforts in a number of states for more than a decade and the overwhelming adoption of Proposition 6 by the voters of Texas brings us one step closer to our goal of incorporating this critical protection across the country.  With  this vote, Texas has enshrined hunting and fishing as an individual constitutional right, becoming the 19th state to add this important safeguard into its constitution

Proposition 6 ensures that future wildlife conservation and management decisions are based on sound science in order to protect our outdoor heritage for generations to come.  It adds the following important language to the Texas Constitution:

"The people have the right to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife, including by the use of traditional methods, subject to laws or regulations to conserve and manage wildlife and preserve the future of hunting and fishing.  Hunting and fishing are preferred methods of managing and controlling wildlife.  This section does not affect any provision of law relating to trespass, property rights, or eminent domain.  This section does not affect the power of the legislature to authorize a municipality to regulate the discharge of a weapon in a populated area in the interest of public safety."

Thank you to all NRA members, hunters and Second Amendment Supporters who went to the polls and voted for Proposition 6.  A special thanks goes to our state leaders and lawmakers who worked to pass Senate Joint Resolution 22 during the 2015 Legislative Session.  Their actions, including those of bill authors state Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) and state Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin), paved the way for ratification of this critical measure.  We would also like to recognize the efforts in support of Proposition 6 by the member organizations that make up Texas Outdoor Partners -- especially the Texas State Rifle Association and the Dallas Safari Club.
