Hunting | Conservation

Hunting is a part of America’s cultural heritage, an important wildlife management tool, and an important part of our national economy.

Annually, approximately 15 million Americans hunt. Hunting is the reason, or one of the reasons, that more than a third of America’s 100 million gun owners own guns.

Hunters and other gun owners are among the foremost supporters of sound wildlife management and conservation practices in the United States. Since 1937, they have contributed more than 7.2 billion dollars to a variety of wildlife and wildlife habitat conservation programs, through Pittman-Robertson Act revenues associated with the purchase of firearms, ammunition and archery equipment. These conservation programs have led to dramatic increases in populations of various game species including deer, elk, antelope, turkeys and waterfowl.

Hunting also contributes more than $38.3 billion to the economy each year, supporting more than 680,000 jobs. Hunters have provided millions of meals to those in need, by donating game meat through Hunters for the Hungry, a program started by the NRA, and similar programs. Hunting continues to rank as one of the safest outdoor activities in America, and an overwhelming majority of Americans support hunting.

The NRA supports many efforts to preserve and promote America’s rich hunting heritage at the federal, state and local levels, including Right to Hunt and Fish state constitutional amendments, policies assuring no net loss of public land open to hunting, mentoring programs for new hunters, hunter safety training programs, range development programs, the use of firearm sound suppressors, and the repeal of laws that prohibit hunting on Sunday.
