Hillary Continues Gun Control Gambit but Tempers Her Message for the Masses

Hillary Continues Gun Control Gambit but Tempers Her Message for the Masses
Last month, we reported on Hillary Clinton’s brash embrace of Australia’s mandatory firearm surrender program during a campaign stop in New Hampshire. Her remarks came in response to an audience member’s question about whether America could follow Australia’s lead and “take away” handguns until they’re “all gone.” Her bottom line: “I think it would be worth considering doing it on the national level if that could be arranged.” This followed remarks she had made earlier in October comparing the NRA to “Iranians” and “Communists.”  A few days after Hillary endorsed Australia’s approach, her handlers were attempting to walk back the obvious import of her remarks. “Of course” she wasn’t advocating for Australia-style gun confiscation, a senior aide insisted, even though Clinton’s remarks had come in response to a question about the feasibility of that program in America. The aide then pivoted to Hillary’s support for “tougher background checks on gun sales,” what she called, “very common-sense measures that the majority of the public supports.”

NRA Statement on Decisive Victories in 2015 Elections
Chris W. Cox, chairman of the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF), released the following statement regarding the NRA’s decisive wins in the November 3rd elections: We would like to thank NRA members and supporters who made the difference in races across the country.  Freedom had a great night at the ballot box.  In addition, we would like to congratulate NRA-endorsed candidates who did not waver in their commitment to protecting the Second Amendment.

McAuliffe Joins the 40% Liars Club, Loses Big On Election Day
Terry McAuliffe became the latest in a long line of gun control mouthpieces to get dinged for lying to the public about firearm background checks. As we have reported again and again, it’s become mandatory for anti-gun politicians and others who are ideologically wedded to gun control to make some variant of the 40% claim. The assertion here is that some huge “loophole” exists in federal law, because 40% of sales or transfers are not covered by the federal background check requirement that applies to retail dealer sales. Their “cure,” of course, is to require government permission, record-keeping, and fees for every instance of a firearm changing hands, including between relatives, neighbors, and members of the same hunter or gun safety courses (for examples of how this works in the real world, see the accounts here and here from Washington State). That claim, however, presents at least two problems.

Wasserman Schultz Orders Democrats to Embrace Gun Control
At the Florida Democratic Party Convention, held October 30-November 1, Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz claimed, “The Florida Democratic Party is back and better than ever.” Also back, it would seem, is the national party’s misguided emphasis on gun control. Speaking at a convention event held at the Walt Disney World Yacht and Beach Club Resort, Wasserman Schultz launched into an anti-gun screed aimed at getting members of her party to more fervently pursue gun control. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Wasserman Schultz demanded, “Democrats! We must close the gun show loophole! Democrats! We must require background checks for all gun purchases!” Indulging her penchant for hyperbole, Wasserman Schultz added, “We can’t sit idly by and allow thousands and thousands of lives to be mowed down!”

Woman Who Illegally Bought Gun Used to Shoot Cop Sentenced to One Year of Probation
A federal judge in Omaha on Monday sentenced a woman to one year of probation for illegally buying a gun on her boyfriend’s behalf from an FFL at a pawnshop. The woman could have been sentenced to a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The boyfriend was a prohibited felon and gang member at the time of the purchase. He later the used the firearm to kill a police officer, Kerrie Orozco, who was trying to arrest him in connection with another shooting. At the time of the shooting, Officer Orozco had recently given birth to a baby and was working her last shift before taking deferred medical leave to care for her child. The baby had been born premature and was finally set to be released from the hospital.

Senate Judiciary Committee Considers Nomination of Operation Choke Point Overlord
On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Stuart F. Delery for the position of associate attorney general of the United States. If confirmed, Delery would become the third-ranking official in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), behind the attorney general and the deputy attorney general. Delery has been serving as “acting” associate attorney general since September 2014. The NRA is seriously troubled by Delery’s nomination because of his supervisory role over DOJ’s scandalous Operation Choke Point (OCP).

60 Minutes Showcases "Smart" Guns Technology
You may be wondering why CBS 60 Minutes aired a segment on “smart” guns last Sunday. After all, a gun that will never work in the hands of an unauthorized person, but that will always work in the hands of everyone else hasn’t been invented. Even the segment’s reporter, Lesley Stahl, conceded that there are concerns about whether “smart” guns “work in snow and rain? Will they work if you`re sweating because an intruder entered your home? Could guns using wireless technology be hacked or jammed and disabled remotely by the government?” There are other, similar concerns too. Would such technology work if, in a defensive situation, a gun were handed off to a family member or other ally? Or if the owner of the gun were wearing a glove? Or, for example, if a right-handed owner were injured and had to hold the gun in his or her left hand? Or whether the electronics would fail if the gun were dropped onto a hard surface. And the list goes on.

Report: Virginia Lawmakers Scheme to Thwart Local Gun Store
In May, we shared the story of NOVA Firearms, a small gun store located in Northern Virginia, and the anti-gun opposition the owner encountered while trying to expand his business. As prejudiced as the then-apparent actions of the Northern Virginia anti-gun community were, a new report from the Washington Times implicating the involvement of several Virginia lawmakers in a campaign to further obstruct NOVA Firearms adds another repugnant layer to this already sordid episode. The initial dispute arose after Marine veteran and NOVA Firearms owner James Gates contracted for retail space located in the well-heeled Cherrydale neighborhood of Arlington, Va. At the time, Gates was already operating a NOVA Firearms location in McLean, Va. without incident.

NRA Gun of the Week: CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol

The third iteration of the CZ Scorpion submachine gun was unveiled in 2009 as the EVO 3 A1, and this year the Czech gunmaker introduced a semi-automatic pistol version of that selective-fire carbine—the EVO 3 S1. Featuring simple blowback operation and chambered for the prevalent 9 mm Luger cartridge, the pistol is essentially identical to its rifle brother, just without the buttstock and the capacity for fully-automatic fire.
