A dog walker in DeKalb County, Georgia, shot and killed a teen Wednesday night after the teen allegedly jumped out of a SUV and demanded the dog walker’s wallet.
Law enforcement were alerted and responded to the incident around 10:30 p.m.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, two teens were allegedly involved in the attempted robbery. DeKalb County Police Department spokesman Shiera Campbell said, “The suspects attempted to rob the victim with a handgun. The victim pulled his handgun and shot one of the suspects.”
When officers arrived the wounded teen was lying the road. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died:
The second suspect was able to escape. Police called in a canine unit to search for the suspect but were unable to find him. It is unknown whether he was wounded when the 44-year-old dog walker opened fire.
WSBTV quoted DeKalb County Lt. Rob Bryant reminding people to pay attention to their surroundings if they walk their dogs at night. He stressed that dog walkers who have a concealed permit ought to be carrying a gun when they walk their dogs.
