An Ambridge man who tried to rob a Subway restaurant on the South Side instead was shot by the clerk he was trying to rob, police said. Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said Calvin Smith, 47, walked into the Subway in the 2700 block of East Carson Street about 8 a.m. Friday with a gun at his side and attempted to rob the store. She said a male employee with a firearm and a permit to carry it “fired several shots and struck [Smith] at least once” in the chest.
