The Wisconsin Department of Justice will continue to issue concealed carry permits under a second round of temporary procedural rules proposed this week. Permanent regulations have been proposed but are awaiting approval in both the state Senate and Assembly. The new temporary rules will ensure that the Department can continue to issue concealed carry permits until the state legislature approves the permanent regulations when the new legislative session convenes in January.
Concealed carry in Wisconsin recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Act 35, which allows law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed firearm outside their home, has been a resounding success with more than 140,000 permits issued as of November 25. Although gun control advocates claimed that Wisconsin would turn into a wild west shooting gallery after the passage of Act 35, the tens of thousands of permit holders have maintained an impeccable safety record and some have defended themselves successfully, mirroring the safety records in the vast majority of other states that have concealed carry permits.
