Tennessee: Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen Vote to Uphold the Second Amendment

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Last night, the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen met to discuss a variety of new ordinances.   Among these ordinances was one that would make it illegal for persons to carry a firearm in a city park, or any building or facility operated by the city for park or recreational purposes.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen sided with law-abiding citizens to uphold the Second Amendment and voted down this anti-gun ordinance.

If passed, law-abiding gun owners who possess a valid handgun carry permit would not have been exempted from this misguided ordinance.  Draconian anti-gun proposals, such as this, would lead to a more vulnerable citizenry.  According to the FBI, while the number of carry permit-holders has reached record numbers, the nation’s violent crime rate has been cut in half, down to a 38-year low.  This proposed ordinance would have burdened law-abiding gun owners by unduly restricting their self-defense rights.

Thank you to all who contacted the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and asked them to oppose this unnecessary gun ban ordinance.  Also, thank you to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen for exercising common sense and for allowing law-abiding gun owners to continue exercising their right to self-defense.
