Delaware Senate Votes to Defund Gun Buyback Program

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Yesterday, the Delaware Senate defeated Senate Bill 204, legislation to renew the state-funded gun “buyback" program.  Misnamed since we do not buy firearms from the government, this program gives away taxpayer dollars to police and community groups in the name of crime reduction.  Many thanks to state Senator Dave Lawson (R-15) who led the charge in helping defeat SB 204 by a 13 to 8 vote.

Sponsored by state Senator Robert Marshall (D-3), SB 204 sought to reauthorize the "Community Firearm Recovery Program," which expires on July 1.  This pilot program, started last year, was budgeted to spend $200,000 for the next fiscal year.  Despite the need for annual funding, SB 204 would have created a permanent framework for this program and expanded it beyond Wilmington.

Gun buybacks across the country have proven to be ineffective and waste of taxpayer dollars. The average person who voluntarily surrenders a firearm to police is not a criminal and the firearms surrendered are not those misused by criminals. Last year, over $100,000 of taxpayer money was squandered in this program, while in no way deterring or reducing violent crime or criminal access to firearms.  Government should not be in the gun (collection) business.

The NRA thanks all members who contacted their state Senator in opposition of SB 204 and those thirteen Senators who voted to save your hard-earned dollars.  If represented by one of the thirteen Senators who voted against SB 204, please call him or her to thank and praise them for doing the right thing.
