Maryland: Legislation to Hike Hunting Fees to be Considered by House Committee this Friday

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

With the hope of balancing the state budget and alleviating government deficits on the backs of hunters, the Maryland House Environmental Matters Committee will consider drastically increasing the costs of hunting licenses and stamps. In addition, it is proposing the creation of new resident and non-resident stamps for turkeys.  This hearing will be held this Friday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m. in the House Office Building in Room 251.

HB 1419, requested by the state Department of Natural Resources, will raise the fees of the following hunting licenses and stamps:

  • Resident, regular at 16 years old and under the age of 65 will increase from $24.50 to $40.00
  • Nonresident, regular at 16 years old and under the age of 65 will increase from $130.00 to $160.00
  • Nonresident three-day hunting license will increase from $45.00 to $60.00
  • Nonresident bow and arrow stamp will increase from $25.00 to $30.00
  • Nonresident muzzleloader stamp will increase from $25.00 to $30.00
  • Nonresident Maryland migratory bird stamp at $30.00
  • Resident turkey stamp at $10.00
  • Nonresident turkey stamp at $30.00
  • Resident dear stamp at $40.00
  • Nonresident consolidated dear stamp $80.00
  • Maryland migratory game bird stamp will increase from $9.00 to $12.00

Please contact members of the House Environment Matters Committee TODAY and respectfully urge them to oppose HB 1419. The NRA understands that hunting fees must be modestly increased from time to time but these increases are extreme and will deter sportsmen from entering and remaining in the field.
