Connecticut: Governor’s Midterm Budget Adjustment Cuts Funding for Pheasant Stocking Program

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

In a move that negatively impacts Connecticut’s hunting heritage, Governor Dan Malloy has decided that cutting the state’s pheasant stock program has suddenly become necessary.  This self-sustaining program is budgeted at $160,000, but in reality draws nothing from the General Fund and would actually cost the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) revenue through reduced license sales.  After taking a closer look at the money being “saved,” the $160,000 is actually the amount of money generated by the program last year and had been set aside for stocking this year’s program.

Pheasant hunting has traditionally been an excellent recruiting tool for new hunters because hunting on state stocked Pheasant Program stocked lands is the least expensive.  At a time when hunting recruitment numbers continue to fall across the country, the importance of recruitment and retention has become crucial.  Taking these opportunities away, especially self-sustaining programs such as this one, negatively impact the hunting heritage of the state and the state’s overall economy.

Please contact your state Senator and state Representative, as well as members of the Appropriations Committee, and urge them to help defend the Pheasant Program and the sporting history of Connecticut.

Also, as a member of the Governors Sportsmen Caucus, contact Governor Malloy and urge him to restore the funding for this program.
