In a move that defies Virginia law and reeks of elitism and contempt, the Hampton, Va. City Council has publicly voiced their intention to ignore Virginia's firearms preemption law by refusing to remove invalid local firearms prohibitions from city code. During a March 23, 2005 City Council meeting, several Council Members questioned to what extent they would be accountable for ignoring state firearm law. When the City Attorney offered that criminal charges were not likely, but that civil penalties could certainly be a possibility, nobody on the Council seemed too concerned! Apparently, the City Council is more than willing to defy state law as long as it is the taxpayers who will pay the price.
NRA Members in the Hampton area are strongly encouraged to contact your City Council Members and demand that the City of Hampton abide by the state firearms laws enacted by the General Assembly, specifically the state firearms preemption law.
