A routine element of political campaigns is the "debate about debates," which usually features the incumbent or front-runner avoiding them and the challenger or underdog calling for as many as possible. Normally the dispute doesn`t affect voters much; most chalk it up to tactical bickering, and the sides end up agreeing with plenty of time before Election Day. This year, however, debates are figuring prominently in New Jersey and Minnesota, where the two U.S. Senate races feature last-minute Democratic replacements, for Sen. Bob Torricelli and the late Sen. Paul Wellstone.
