to my pistol," says 77-year-old O'Dell Alston of Beaufort, South
Carolina, describing her encounter with a knife-wielding robber in
Alston's grocery store. Pretending to make a purchase, the robber
waited for Alston to open the cash register. He then pulled his
weapon and went behind the counter, where he began removing money
from the drawer. Once he saw that Alston was armed, however, he
fled. Police Lieutenant Steve Rogers said Alston's actions were
legal. "You have a right to protect your business, especially when
you are threatened with a deadly weapon like a knife."
