Having wrecked a stolen car down the road, two young gunmen
attempted to gain entrance to the Memphis, Tenn., home of Holmes
Winford on the pretext of summoning a wrecker. Failing this, they
shot in the glass, forced their way in, and began beating Winford.
Mrs. Winford, hearing the commotion, peeked through her bedroom door
and saw the youths beating her husband. She loaded an old cal. .38
pistol in the dark, and stepped out to confront the gunmen. One
opened fire on her and missed, and Mrs. Winford then shot and killed
one and downed the other with a bullet in the hip.
