The "Blame and Punish Gun Owners Act"

Anti-gun politicians have often looked for ways to penalize law-abiding gun owners rather than go after violent criminals.

Cook County Gives Up On Stopping Crime – Considers Passing Law to Punish the Victim Instead of the Criminal!

Today, Cook County Commissioners trotted out their latest in a series of affronts to law-abiding gun owners: an ordinance that does not even attempt to go after the criminal, but – literally -- makes the victims of crime pay!  The proposed ordinance, sponsored by County Commissioners Toni Preckwinkle, Jesus Garcia, John P. Daley, Edwin Reyes and Larry Suffredin, says that after 48 hours of when the firearm should have been known to be either lost or stolen, the victim of the gun theft is in violation.  If a theft of a firearm is not reported to Cook County and local law enforcement entities are not notified within this arbitrary period of time, law-abiding gun owners will have to pay a fine ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 – on top of being robbed already!   This penalty would apply not only to residents of Cook County wherever the loss, destruction, or theft took place, but to any person who owns or possesses a firearm and resides outside of Cook County who loses, destroys, transfers or is robbed of the firearm in Cook County.

New Jersey Governor Signs Anti-Gun Legislation into Law

On Sunday, January 13, Governor Jon Corzine (D) once again vilified New Jersey’s law-abiding gun owners by signing S2470/A2602, S2934/A4620, and S2431 into law. Thank you to all NRA members in the Garden State who answered the call in the fight to preserve our Second Amendment rights. NRA-ILA will continue the battle to reverse these onerous restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.

New York: Gov. Cuomo and Anti-Gun Legislators Admit SAFE ACT Mistakes - But Continue Assault On Lawful Gun Owners

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and state legislative leaders have now publicly admitted mistakes in their rush to pass what is arguably the worst gun control law in the country – the SAFE ACT. After intense public pressure, the state’s chief executive and lawmakers discussed including amendments to the SAFE Act this week during the state budget negotiations. Specifically, much of the focus was on the seven-round magazine limit. However, the prospects for making the law more lenient disappeared when a rough budget agreement was reached this week. Many of the provisions of the SAFE Act are set to take effect April 15.

New Jersey: Your Calls to Stop the Anti-Gun Bills Have Overwhelmed Legislative Leadership Offices!

Yesterday, NRA members began contacting the Senate and Assembly Majority Leaders and have overwhelmed their offices with phone calls and e-mails!  Your telephone calls are making a difference in New Jersey!  It is important that you now redirect these calls from leadership to your own state Senator and Assemblymen.  Remind them that law-abiding New Jersey gun owners are already subject to some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and these laws have been proven ineffective at reducing crime. Tell them their constituents oppose further restrictions on their Second Amendment Rights, and urge your legislators to introduce reasonable legislation to rationally address existing crime problems and empower the law-abiding to protect themselves and loved ones.   Don’t let anti-gun zealots in Trenton punish the law-abiding gun owner.  Below is a list of some of the worst bills in play so far this session.  While many other bad bills have been filed, your action is needed NOW to stop the most egregious among them:

New Jersey: Anti-Gun Bills Moving to Governor’s Desk!

On Monday, January 7, the New Jersey legislature passed S2470/A2602, S2934/A4620, and S2431. Unfortunately, as usual, these bills do nothing to impact criminals, impact public safety, or assist police in fighting crime but only harass legal firearm owners. These bills will now head to Governor Jon Corzine (D) for his consideration. Please contact the Governor's office today and respectfully urge him to veto these bills and concentrate on taking criminals off the street, not restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. The Governor can bee reached by phone at (609) 292-6000 or visit http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html to send email.

Railroaded: How Connecticut's Gun Owners & Gun Makers are Getting Run Down

The horror a madman brought to an elementary school last December requires anyone who talks about guns and Connecticut to begin by compassionately expressing sorrow and condolences—compassion for those lost and for those mourning that is never enough, as the breadth of spoken language can’t articulate it. What comes next, however, is harder. According to those who want to disarm Americans, gun owners are supposed to remain cowed by this sorrow; after offering condolences, gun owners aren’t supposed to voice reason into an emotional debate that literally has to do with life and death.

Delaware: Governor’s First Anti-Gun Bill Drafted

Last month, as reported by NRA-ILA, Governor Jack Markell (D) unleashed a five-point plan to subject Delaware to sweeping gun control measures.  Yesterday, he unveiled the first draft in what is expected to be a series of anti-gun legislation.  The bill printed yesterday - which has yet to be assigned a bill number - would require any gun owner to notify police within 48 hours if a firearm was lost or stolen.  This bill does nothing to solve an existing crime problem, but is an ideological attack on gun ownership.  It institutes policies to criminalize victims of crime, and subjects anyone who does not follow these arbitrary laws to heavy fines or felony charges that would take away their right to possess a firearm legally.

Delaware: Governor Jack Markell Signs into Law Measure Attacking Law-Abiding Gun Owners

Last week, Senate Bill 16 was signed into law by Governor Jack Markell (D).  Sponsored by Senator Margaret Rose Henry (D-2), Senate Bill 16 imposes onerous requirements on innocent victims of crime, merely because they are gun owners.  SB 16 requires a gun owner to notify law enforcement if a firearm was stolen or lost within an arbitrary time period, and carries severe penalties and fines for violations.  This legislation is highly discriminatory, an excessive waste of taxpayer funds and law enforcement resources, will not impact crime and is opposed by the NRA.   This legislation went into effect immediately upon the Governor’s signature on June 12.

Governor Brown made his opposition to this fundamental right, protected by the Second Amendment, clear when he recently signed into law three anti-gun bills. He did veto a fourth anti-gun bill, but only because there is a pending lawsuit.

John Kerry`s Voting Record on Second Amendment and Hunting Issues

His voting record makes John F. Kerry the most anti-gun Presidential nominee in United States history. Since his election to the U.S. Senate in 1984, John F. Kerry has cast 59 votes (NRA did not score 4 of them) on issues involving firearms rights and hunting. These votes included votes to ban guns, to impose waiting periods on gun buyers, to financially punish gun manufacturers for operating a legal business and to restrict the free speech of Second Amendment advocates.
