The "Tiahrt Amendment" on Firearms Traces: Protecting Gun Owners' Privacy and Law Enforcement Safety

For over a decade, cities and anti-gun organizations sought access to confidential law enforcement data on firearms traces, both for use in lawsuits against the firearms industry and for use in questionable studies used to support their goals. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) compiles these records when it traces firearms in response to requests from law enforcement agencies.

On Sunday, the anti-gun Children's Defense Fund (CDF) set up a sideshow in front of the Washington National Cathedral during which blacksmiths melted, hammered and ground "weapons" into hand-held garden tools, for what it called "a modern-day interpretation of the biblical passage about beating swords into plowshares."

NRA-ILA Fax Alert

This Sunday, March 4, "Dateline NBC" is scheduled to air "In the Line of Fire"—a story NBC describes as an "in-depth look at guns and young people in the United States." If past is prelude, however, the pro-freedom community should expect the "in-depth look" to be rife with anti-Second Amendment bias. NBC has a long history of exhibiting a clear anti-gun perspective in its news programs—a fact supported by studies from the Media Research Center (MRC)—and we should be prepared for no less this Sunday. We understand the story will close with a debate between U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.)—an extremely vocal anti-gun extremist—and U.S. Representative Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.)—a staunch defender of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Don`t be surprised if McCarthy begins to sound like a spokesman for HCI, as the Representative is one of the gun-ban lobby`s most ardent supporters.

NRA-ILA Fax Alert

Right to Keep and Bear Arms was fired by one of the newer groups to enter the fray—the fledgling anti-gun organization, "Americans for Gun Safety" (AGS). The organization, which refers to itself as a "centrist, non-partisan group," was launched last year with heavy funding from billionaire Andrew J. McKelvey of Monster.com, and has begun running ads that renew the attack on gun shows. And while the ads claim the group recognizes "the right to own a gun," the truth is, AGS is nothing more than a rehash of many of the existing anti-gun organizations.

Harvard study shows no effect of firearm laws on gun deaths

Harvard medical researchers just published a scholarly paper in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, claiming that more firearm laws in a state are associated with a lower rate of gun homicides and suicides.  However, examination of their data and research methods shows the opposite.McMaster University researcher Caillin Langmann, MD, PhD noted that the Harvard authors' own best analysis:* Does not show that states with more gun laws have fewer gun deaths* Demonstrates that "assault weapon" bans have no effect on homicide* Demonstrates that laws prohibiting guns in public places have no effect on homicideEven more damning, Dr. Garen Wintemute, well known for research advocating gun control, agrees with Dr. Langmann.  In his editor invited commentary Wintemute faults the Harvard authors for relying on a state gun law grading system used by the Brady Center (formerly known as Handgun Control, Inc.) and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.  Both of these organizations are dedicated gun control advocates.  Using their political ploy in a scientific journal is disgraceful.

Obama: Anti-Gun Arrogance vs. the Constitution

Who decides what laws must be obeyed? According to President Obama, it’s him. In December, he told Congress that he doesn’t consider himself bound by federal laws that limit his ability to use tax dollars to promote gun control. The arrogant declaration came just two weeks after Americans learned of the documents proving that the Obama administration’s “Operation Fast and Furious” allowed guns to “walk” to Mexico so that their use in crime there could be used to justify gun control in the United States—further evidence of the administration’s utter lawlessness when it comes to Second Amendment issues.

Colorado governor suggests gun control groups stay away

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper suggests national gun control groups stay away from a looming recall battle that could switch control of the state Senate to the GOP. The groups poured money into an unsuccessful defense of two state lawmakers recalled over their gun votes earlier this year."Colorado is a state that people like to be themselves and solve their own problems," the Democratic governor said in an interview with Capital Download, USA TODAY's weekly video newsmaker series. "They don't really like outside organizations meddling in their affairs, and maybe the NRA gets a pass on that."But (it is) probably not a bad idea" for gun control groups, such as the one established by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, to curb their efforts if gun rights activists collect enough signatures to force a recall vote on state Sen. Evie Hudak, a two term Democrat from a suburban district north of Denver, he said.

Obama administration holding regular meetings with gun control groups

President Barack Obama's behind the scenes plans for gun control go on but without Vice President Joe Biden.Biden, the White House's public face of and private force behind the push for new gun control laws, and his chief of staff, Bruce Reed, are no longer involved in the long term planning between the White House and major gun violence prevention groups, officials from several organizations tell POLITICOThe vice president's disappearance from an issue he'd been spearheading is a clear signal of how much the focus has shifted from passing gun control legislation in Congress to winning reforms at state capitols and building local networks that can pressure and help elect members of Congress over the long term. The background checks bill Obama championed in the Senate isn't going to get another vote after falling short in April unless several senators publicly change their mind, aides to senators involved in gun control discussions say.Officials from the White House Office of Public Engagement, which reports to senior Obama aide Valerie Jarrett, are now carrying the administration's gun control efforts. OPE officials hold a regular meeting with the major gun control groups known as the Gun Violence Table.
