NRA-Supported Law Makes Voting Easier For Sportsmen In Georgia

Thursday, May 13, 2004

FAIRFAX, VA -- In the first law of its kind in the nation, Georgia will now allow citizens to register to vote while they get their hunting and fishing licenses. The "Sportsmen Voter Registration Bill" (SB 541), signed into law today by Governor Sonny Perdue and supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA), was patterned after the popular "motor voter" law and requires businesses who sell hunting and fishing licenses to act as a voter registration site as well. The Georgia General Assembly overwhelmingly approved the measure.

"This is an exciting opportunity to get hunters and sportsmen out of the field and streams and to the polls on election day," said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. "We hope this encourages more freedom-loving Georgians to cast their ballot in support of candidates who respect America`s outdoor heritage.

"I want to thank Governor Perdue, Senator Preston Smith and supporters in the Georgia General Assembly for recognizing the importance of providing ample opportunities to register citizens to vote. I am hopeful that this law will encourage other states to follow Georgia`s lead and engage more Americans in the electoral process," added Cox. "As always, NRA will continue to inform our four million members and the 80 million American gun owners nationwide about candidates who will work to protect our shooting and hunting traditions and candidates who oppose our Second Amendment right."

The 133-year-old National Rifle Association is the nation`s oldest civil rights group, and advocates enforcement of existing laws to prosecute and punish violent criminals. The NRA is the leader in teaching gun safety and promoting marksmanship. The Association has approximately four million members across America.
