Yesterday, in a New York Daily News commentary, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) paraphrased President Obama's most insincere campaign talking point with a direct quote from Brady Campaign propaganda, saying "You can support the Second Amendment" by imposing "common sense" gun control laws. In particular, McCarthy said that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, used to screen persons who purchase firearms from dealers, is ineffective, but should be extended to apply to private sales of firearms anyway.
This is the same "Second Amendment-supporting" Carolyn McCarthy who in 2003, 2005 and 2007 proposed legislation to ban the AR-15, the M1 Garand, the M1 carbine, the Ruger Mini-14 and Ranch Rifle series, and every semi-automatic shotgun, and who more recently proposed legislation to ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
Friendly wagers around NRA headquarters center around whether McCarthy, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), or both will camp out overnight on the steps of the Capitol--like teenagers waiting in line for concert tickets--so as to be the first to introduce gun control bills when Congress opens for business in 2013.
