Virginia: Sussex County Passes Anti-Hunting Ordinance

Monday, May 12, 2014

The Sussex County Board of Supervisors recently passed a “noise ordinance” with Sunday hunting in its crosshairs. This new ordinance unfairly targets firearms more heavily than any other device that produces loud sound, specifically on Sundays between the hours of 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

These misguided restrictions make it clear that the reduction of noise is not the intent of this new ordinance, but instead is an attempt by the Sussex County Supervisors to make hunting and other forms of recreational shooting virtually impossible on Sundays.  This ordinance is in direct conflict with the Virginia General Assembly’s intent in passing House Bill 1237 (allowing Sunday hunting on private property with written permission) this year, and unfairly targets hunters and shooters over other recreational activities.

The Sussex County Board of Supervisors will meet again this Thursday, May 15, from 7:00-9:00 p.m.  While it is the NRA’s understanding that this ordinance will not be on the agenda for this meeting, there will be time provided for public comment.  Please attend this meeting and urge the Board of Supervisors to reconsider this misguided anti-hunting measure.  Also, using the contact information provided below, please also call AND e-mail all five Sussex County Supervisors and urge them to strike the anti-hunting language from the ordinance and to honor the intent of the state legislature when they passed Sunday hunting into law.  Please stay tuned for further details, as there will be a separate district meeting to discuss anticipated modifications to the noise ordinance at a later date.  Your NRA-ILA will keep you informed as this matter progresses.
