California:Legislators Return to Sacramento for 2014 Session Second Amendment Rights are at Risk Again

Friday, January 17, 2014

If 2013 proved anything, it is that California legislators are determined to impose radical gun control laws on the public.  Fortunately, 2013 also proved that such efforts can be stopped, even in California.  Last year over fifty gun-related bills were introduced, including such extreme measures as a nickel tax on every round of ammunition sold, a ban on hundreds of thousands of commonly owned rifles and a restriction on transferring standard pistols, even to offspring.  But only thirteen of these bills were signed into law, most of which were benign or of little concern, and some actually beneficial to firearm owners.  To view a list of these bills, please click here.

This was the result of, in large part, an unprecedented commitment by lawful gun owners to make their voices heard.  Gun owners answered the NRA’s regular calls to action by flooding the state legislature and the Governor’s office with e-mails, letters and phone calls.  Lawful gun owners are commended for their vital efforts in 2013.  But, they cannot become complacent in the fight to maintain liberty.  While many of us were spending the last few weeks with our families and friends, celebrating the important things in life, many of our legislators were dreaming of ways to circumvent our Second Amendment rights.  Unfortunately, state legislators ended their all too short vacation and returned to work last week with renewed determination to deter lawful firearm ownership by law-abiding citizens.

As you can see from the recent news conference, some California legislators are at it again, pushing a misleading anti-gun agenda with Senate Bill 808 and Senate Bill 199.

  • SB 808 would impose heavy restrictions and costly fees on the ability to make, or even assemble a personal firearm.
  • SB 199 would ban the sale/transfer of used and antique BB devices and imitation firearms that are not colored, as specified.  Congress preempted state law and stated that federal statute would supersede any state or local laws requiring “markings or identification inconsistent with provisions” of the federal statute. 15 U.S.C. §5001(g). In addition, federal statute specifically prohibits a state from banning the sale of traditional air guns.

Those are just two of the anti-gun bills that the NRA is currently tracking and more are expected to be introduced or re-introduced in the coming days.  Anti-gun lawmakers have also promised to resurrect a bill that would require background checks and costly permits before one could purchase ammunition.  If you haven’t already, sign up for California NRA’s Stayed Informed e-mail alerts so you know what bills the NRA opposes or supports and when the time comes you can take appropriate action.

The NRA needs your help and support again this year to fight back these attacks on our Second Amendment rights.
