New Jersey: Attack on Second Amendment Continues in Trenton

Thursday, June 20, 2013

Both state Senate and Assembly Scheduled to Vote on Monday

Lawmakers in Trenton are close to completing final action on the “centerpiece” gun control bill next week despite the flagrant and embarrassing disregard for legislative process.  As reported earlier, a roll call vote on this bill was halted in the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee on June 6.  After it became apparent this bill was going to be short on votes and fail, anti-gun lawmakers put on the brakes and incredibly called for a “do-over.”  In an unusual and potentially illegal move, this bill was shuttled to the Assembly Budget Committee for a vote on June 17.  With the outcome all but assured in the new cherry-picked venue, the Assembly committee forced this bill through on a party-line vote.  The final version of Senate President Stephen Sweeney’s S2723 / A4182 is now scheduled to be considered in sessions on the floor of both the Assembly and Senate on Monday, June 24, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.

The Sweeney legislation throws out existing FID cards and replaces them with either a privacy-invading driver license endorsement or other form of identification.  It also suspends Second Amendment rights without proof of firearms training, imposes a seven-day waiting period for handgun purchases, ends all private sales, and effectively creates a registry of ammunition purchases and long gun sales.  Democrats have touted this bill as a "national model” yet continue to see failure to prevent crime with the passage of all such anti-gun legislation.

Please immediately call your state Senator and both of your Assembly members TODAY and tell them to oppose all anti-gun legislation, especially S2723 / A4182.
