Important Hearing on Pro-Gun and Anti-Gun Bills on Monday, April 8

House Bill 3009, introduced by state representatives Sal Esquivel (R-6) and Greg Smith (R-57), is scheduled to be heard in the House Higher Education Committee on Monday, April 8. This common sense pro-gun bill would allow concealed handgun license holders to possess firearms on college or university grounds, unless the body seeking to limit this right is expressly authorized by state statute.

Anti-gun legislators are attempting to thwart this reform with House Bill 3114, sponsored by the House Higher Education Committee.  This bill would authorize all public universities listed in ORS 352.002, the Oregon Health and Science University or a community college district to adopt a policy to regulate, restrict or prohibit the possession of firearms within and on the buildings and property the university or district owns or occupies.  This gun ban would apply to all, including concealed handgun license (CHL) holders.

Both of these bills are scheduled for a public hearing in the House Higher Education Committee on Monday, April 8, at 8:30 a.m. in House Room D at the State Capitol.  For more information on how to testify or submit materials, please click here.

Please contact members of the House Higher Education Committee TODAY.  Urge them to recognize and protect your right to self-defense.  So-called 'gun-free zones' in reality are simply places where CHLs are rendered defenseless against criminals under current law.  Encourage the state representatives on this Committee to institute real reforms for Oregon by supporting HB 3009 and opposing HB 3114.
