Oklahoma: Mourning the Loss of a Second Amendment Leader and Fighter

Oklahoma firearm owners lost a loyal friend on April 6, when state Representative Sue Tibbs passed away after a strong and courageous battle with cancer. Sue Tibbs was 77 years old and in her final term in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Representative Sue Tibbs was an NRA A+ rated pro-gun warrior. During her tenure, she authored and co-authored numerous laws to expand firearm freedoms in Oklahoma, including the ten-year Oklahoma Carry Permit in 2009, the Gun Permit Privacy Act in 2010 and last year’s law to allow locked firearms in Vo-Tech Parking Lots.

Representative Tibbs maintained an outstanding voting record on the Second Amendment, voting in support of a wide variety of pro-gun legislation, including: prohibiting employers from asking about private firearm ownership, establishing an emergency carry permit for those with protective orders, shooting range protection, gun sales tax exemptions, allowing non-contiguous state long gun purchases, establishing a black bear season, lifetime hunting licenses, Castle Doctrine expansion and Gun Show Integrity measures.

Although cancer treatments made attendance at the Oklahoma capitol difficult, Representative Tibbs continued to make every effort to continue her work as a legislator and Chairman of the House Public Safety Committee. While not present for several committee meetings, Chairman Tibbs was actively involved this year in the process of creating an omnibus gun bill that was supported by the NRA.

Sue Tibbs was a staunch supporter of firearm freedoms and a great friend to Oklahoma gun owners. Her presence will be sorely missed in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the National Rifle Association extends its heartfelt condolences, sympathy and prayers to the Tibbs family during this difficult time.
