Alder Judy Compton has introduced an ordinance taking aim at imitation firearms (toy guns) to the Madison City Council. This proposed ordinance would levy a $300 civil penalty against anyone that uses fake "weapons" in a manner that is intended to "alarm, intimate, threaten or terrify another person."
While well intended, the vague language of this ordinance could be construed to make civil offenders out of children playing cops and robbers with toy guns. Wisconsin state law already prohibits the sale and distribution of any “look-alike firearm” that is an imitation of any real firearm. This ordinace would be a redundant law that takes away from focusing on real crime issues.
Please contact the members of the Madison City Council at (608) 266-4071 and urge them to vote NO on the Imitation Firearms Ordinance.
