Help Stop Union County, NJ from Criminalizing Lead Ammunition at Range

Tuesday, December 14, 2004

Please email, fax, or call the Union County Freeholders and urge them NOT to criminalize the possession or use of lead ammunition at the Lenape Park Trap & Skeet Range on December 16.  Please also come to the Freeholder’s meeting on the 16th and make your voice heard!

Proposed Ordinance number 607-2004 bans the use of lead ammunition at Lenape Park, a public facility owned and operated by Union County, New Jersey since 1927.  It also criminalizes even the mere possession of lead ammunition at that site, providing for up to 90 day’s imprisonment for each violation.  A box of handgun ammunition in a range bag in your trunk could land you in jail.

The Ordinance follows Union County’s unsuccessful attempt to close the range last month rather than work with environmental regulators to study and implement gradual environmental practices over a period of years.  After an outpouring of support from gun owners, the Freeholders decided to keep the range open (at least for now), but have overreacted by attempting to ban lead ammunition and criminalize its possession.

Instead, the Freeholders should implement a gradual phase-in of environmental management practices required by government regulators, and keep traditional trap and skeet shooting intact.

The Ordinance will be considered at the Freeholder’s meeting on Thursday, December 16, at 7:00 p.m. at the Union County Administrative Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza, Elizabeth, NJ 07207, 6th floor (for directions, go to http://ucnj.org/direct/DIRECT.HTM).
