Texas Legislative Alert 1/3/01

Monday, May 28, 2001

The anti-Second Amendment forces in Austin will be at it again shortly! Their ambitious agenda includes prefiled state legislative proposals that sound like a Clinton-Gore Administration "gun control" wish list: Bills mandating the sale of a trigger-locking device with every new firearm sold by a licensed dealer (prefiled as S.B. 88 by Sen. Rodney Ellis); Measures requiring use of the flawed federal NICS check system for every firearm sale -- even between private collectors and other non-licensed individuals -- at gun shows (H.B. 367 by Rep. Juan Hinojosa, H.B. 404 by Rep. Debra Danburg. Also, H.B. 194, prefiled by Rep. Lon Burnam, increases penalties for illegal firearm transfers at gun shows. Anti-gunners may see this as a possible "vehicle" for more restrictions on gun shows); Attempts to restrict youth firearm possession for hunting, sporting and other lawful purposes (prefiled as H.B. 193 by Rep. Lon Burnam and HB 209 by Rep. John Longoria). Please call your State Senators and State Representatives at the district office numbers listed below. Urge them to oppose these and any other "gun control" bills introduced this session. Let them know that NRA members support true crime control efforts like Texas Exile and proven accident prevention programs like NRA`s Eddie Eagle GunSafe program. Our call should be for strong enforcement of the more than 20,000 gun laws already on the books and safety through education -- not more legislation! NRA-ILA will be present in Austin, monitoring and updating you on legislative developments. You may check the text and status of bills that have been prefiled and introduced once the session begins by visiting www.state.tx.us. If you do not know your Senator or Representative please see our Guide to the Texas Legislature, enter your zip code and click "Search" to find them.
