Michigan: House Judiciary Committee Expected to Vote Tomorrow on House Air Gun Reclassification Bills

Tomorrow, the House Judiciary Committee is expected to consider and vote on House Bills 5450,5749 and 5750, part of the Air Gun Reclassification Package.  If enacted into law, this legislative package would align Michigan’s definition of “firearm” with the federal definition; such that “firearm” would be redefined to mean “any weapon which will, is designed to, or may be readily converted to expel a projectile by action of an explosive.”

Michigan: Senate Passes Air Gun Reclassification Package

Today, the Michigan Senate passed five bills that together have been referred to as the Air Gun Reclassification Package.  Senate Bills 963, 964, 965 & 966 all passed by a unanimous 38 – 0 vote.  Senate Bill 979, which protects air gun possession and use from overzealous local regulation, passed by a 28-10 vote.  This important legislative package seeks to achieve pragmatic and much-needed reform by redefining the term “firearm” in the Michigan Code to exclude devices that propel a projectile by gas, spring or air.

Michigan: Update on Pro-Gun Reforms in Lansing

Over the next couple of months, the Michigan Legislature will be taking an extended recess to allow state legislators to return to their respective districts and focus on constituent issues.  As a result, during the limited legislative session days left before the lame-duck session begins in November, it is important that the state legislature focus on priority legislation.  The NRA views the legislation below as top priorities for 2014 and encourages our members to contact their state legislators to express their support.

Michigan: Youth Firearm Education Bill Takes Effect Today

As previously reported, yesterday, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) signed into law a bill that expands firearms safety training opportunities for Michigan youth. House Bill 5085, which took immediate effect as Public Act 201 of 2014, corrects an unduly burdensome restraint on youth firearm education by reasonably expanding the class of individuals who are allowed to supervise and instruct Michigan’s youth in the safe use of pistols.

Yesterday, a small but vocal group of anti-gun protestors descended on the state Capitol in Lansing to urge the Michigan Legislature to pass House Bill 4774, egregious legislation that would be an affront to your Second Amendment rights. Michigan: House Judiciary Committee to Vote Today on Bill to Repeal State Ban on Short-Barreled Rifles and Shotguns

Today, the Michigan House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Senate Bill 610.  SB 610, sponsored by state Senator Michael Green (R-31), would repeal Michigan’s ban on the private ownership of short barreled rifles and shotguns.  Short-barreled rifles and shotguns are already strictly regulated under the National Firearms Act, requiring their buyers to undergo a background check, pay a $200 tax and register these firearms with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Michigan: Legislation to Eliminate Concealed Carry Licensing Boards Introduced in Senate

Michigan: Governor Signs House Bill 4993 into Law

House Bill 4993 (now Public Act 246) was signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder (R) on December 21.  HB 4993 creates a Wildlife Management Public Education Fund to be managed by the Michigan Wildlife Council.  This nine-member council will be responsible for establishing a comprehensive media-based public information program aimed at promoting Michigan’s abundant wildlife resources and educating the general public on the role that sportsmen play in the conservation of these resources.

Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Gun Owner Protection Legislation

Earlier today, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to keep the personal information of gun permit applicants confidential and exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests.  Senate Bill 49, introduced by state Senator Thomas Casperson, passed in a 4 to 0 vote and is now eligible for a vote in the full Senate.

Michigan Legislature Introduces Gun Owner Protection Legislation

As the Michigan state Senate finishes its second week of the new legislative session, pro-gun legislators have already begun to advocate for the rights of law-abiding gun owners.  State Senator Thomas Casperson (R-38) filed a bill that would keep the personal information of permit-to-purchase applicants confidential and exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests.  This bill, Senate Bill 49, has been scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday January 23 in the Senate Judiciary Committee at 8:30 am.
