Iowa Gun Owner Privacy Protection Bill Needs Your Help in Senate Subcommittee

NRA-backed House File 535, legislation prohibiting the publication of the names and addresses of individuals possessing permits to acquire and carry firearms, has been assigned to a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee where it is in danger of being stalled or defeated for this legislative session.  HF 535 passed in the House by an overwhelming 95 to 3 vote on March 18 after passing unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee by a 20-0 vote the week before.  Introduced originally as House File 81 by state Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17), this privacy protection legislation is an important reform to Iowa’s gun laws – and is in need of your help! It is imperative that you contact state senators Robert Hogg (D-33), Janet Petersen (D-18) and Kent Sorenson (R-13) TODAY and respectfully request that they give HF 535 a fair hearing and a favorable vote.

Iowa Gun Confidentiality Protection Bill Receives Overwhelming Approval in the House

House File 535, an NRA-backed bill prohibiting the publication of the names and addresses of individuals possessing permits to acquire and carry firearms, was sent to the state House floor for final approval last week.  HF 535 passed by an overwhelming 95 to 3 vote today.  Introduced originally as House File 81 by state Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17), this privacy protection legislation passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee by a 20-0 vote last week.  It will now be sent to the state Senate, where it will be assigned to a committee.

Iowa Gun Confidentiality Protection Ready for Final House Vote

An NRA-backed bill prohibiting the publication of the names and addresses of individuals possessing permits to acquire and carry firearms has been cleared for final approval in the state House of Representatives.  Introduced by state Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17) originally as House File 81, this privacy protection legislation passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee by a 20-0 vote last week.  It is now eligible to be considered on the state House floor as House File 535 and will be up for floor debate as early as this coming Monday, March 18.

Iowa: Pro-Gun Bill Passes in House Judiciary Committee

On Wednesday, March 6, NRA-backed House File 81 passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee by a 20-0 vote.  Introduced by state Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17), this important legislation would prohibit the publication of the names and addresses of individuals possessing permits to acquire and carry.

Iowa: Expansive Gun Control Bill Introduced

This week, long-time anti-gun state Senator Jack Hatch (D-17) introduced Senate File 233 seeking to criminalize the private transfer of firearms.  SF 233 would make it a crime for a private individual to transfer his or her legally-owned firearm without going through a federal firearm licensed dealer (FFL) to conduct a background check on the transferee.  Exceptions are made only for “immediate family members” and individuals possessing permits to acquire or carry.  The provisions would apply to all gun sales, gifts, loans, rentals or trades between friends, neighbors, co-workers or more-distant relatives.  These restrictions would also apply to temporary transfers during hunting or target practice.  SF 233 has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Education although a hearing date has not been scheduled at this time.

Iowa: Ames City Council Moving to Trample on the Second Amendment Despite State Firearm Preemption Law

On Tuesday, September 25, the Ames City Council voted 6 to 0 to amend its zoning ordinance to include a prohibition of firearm sales as a home occupation.  This was the first of three hearings on this proposed ordinance, with the second hearing on this issue scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th.

Updated Iowa: Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to Headline NRA and Iowa Firearms Coalition’s Third Annual Second Amendment Rally

The National Rifle Association (NRA), Iowa Firearms Coalition (IFC) and Brownell’s will host the 3rd Annual Second Amendment Rally on Saturday, August 25 from 9AM to 5PM at Brownells’ Big Springs Shooting Complex.  Firearm and hunting manufacturers and representatives will be in attendance, and the event will offer a variety of shooting and training opportunities. NRA members and media are invited and encouraged to attend this free event and meet many of Iowa’s pro-Second Amendment legislators and activists.  Additionally, if you are an NRA or IFC member, your range fees will be waived.

Iowa: Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Holds Up Two NRA-Priority Gun Bills

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Gene Fraise (D-46), despite overwhelming support from Senate Republicans and Iowans across the state, refused to hold any hearing on either NRA-initiated HF 2215, the Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine Enhancement, or HJR 2009, a proposed right to keep and bear arms constitutional amendment.  In doing so, Senator Fraise has severely limited the options available to pass NRA’s legislative priorities.

Iowa: House Democratic Caucus Returns and House Passes Two NRA-Backed Pro-Gun Bills

Yesterday was an eventful day in Des Moines for pro-gun advocates that began with the House Democratic caucus’ mass exodus from the state capitol in protest of the scheduled consideration of two NRA priority pro-gun bills.  Once normal order was restored, gun owners in the Hawkeye State saw the Right to Keep and Bear Arms state constitutional amendment amended to the original NRA-supported language and passed.  Gun owners then saw the passage of Stand Your Ground legislation.  Both of these bills will now be sent to the state Senate for committee assignment and consideration.

NRA Priority Firearm Preemption Bill Moving Forward in Iowa Legislature

Another NRA priority bill is moving forward in the Iowa House of Representatives. House File 2114, the firearms preemption legislation, passed the state House Public Safety Subcommittee yesterday by a 2 to 1 vote.  State Representatives Matt Windschitl (R-56) and Dwayne Alons (R-4) supported this critical legislation, while state Representative Rick Olson (D-68) voted against it.  HF 2114 has been scheduled to be voted on by the full House Public Safety Committee TOMORROW.

Iowa: Traditional Ammunition Bill and Right to Keep and Bear Arms Constitutional Amendment Progressing in the Hawkeye State!

Today, the Iowa House of Representatives passed HJR 2001, legislation to protect your right to use traditional (lead) ammunition by a 73 to 27 vote.  Also today, the House Public Safety Subcommittee passed, HJR 2005, the Iowa Right to Keep and Bear Arms Constitutional Amendmentby a 2 to 1 vote.  These bills represent two of the NRA’s top legislative priorities this session.

Iowa Legislature Moving Forward with Important Pro-Gun and Pro-Hunting Legislation

Yesterday, the state House Public Safety Subcommittee passed HF 573 by a 2 to 1 vote.  This important “stand your ground” self-defense legislation will now be heard by the full House Public Safety Committee as early as tomorrow.  State Representatives Clel Baulder (R-58) and Matt Windschitl (R-56) voted to pass HF 573, while Representative Rick Olson (D-68) voted against it.  Also, Senate Joint Resolution 2001 passed in the state Senate Natural Resources and Environment Committee by a 9 to 3 vote.  In the meantime, House Joint Resolution 2001, House companion of SJR 2001, is expected to be voted on tomorrow in the state House Natural Resources Committee.

Iowa: Resolutions Protecting Traditional Ammunition to be Heard in State Senate and House Committees

Yesterday, the state Senate Natural Resources and Environment Subcommittee passed Senate Joint Resolution 2001 by a 2 to 1 vote and it will now go before the full committee.  This resolution, sponsored by state Senator Dick Dearden (D-34), would remove the Iowa Natural Resources Commission’s unnecessary regulation banning the use of traditional ammunition for dove hunting.  Also yesterday, the state House Natural Resources Subcommittee passed the House companion resolution to SJR 2001 by a 3 to 2 vote.  HJR 2001, sponsored by state Representative Clel Baudler (R-58) now goes to the full House Natural Resources committee.

Iowa: Proposed Gun Ban Tabled in Knoxville

Last night, the Knoxville City Council tabled a proposed gun-ban designed to deny all Iowans the ability to lawfully carry firearms in any city-owned building. Iowa: Administrative Rules Committee Strips Dove Rule of Traditional Ammunition Ban!

Today, the Administrative Rules Committee met to review the National Resource Commission’s (NRC) final rule for Iowa’s first dove hunting season. In a nine-to-one bipartisan vote, legislators overwhelmingly rejected the NRC’s underhanded attempt to include a traditional ammunition ban in the final dove rule. This vote allows for a “session-delay” of the lead ammunition ban, meaning the legislature will have to act during the next legislative session to remove the ban from the final dove rule. However, Iowa’s first dove season will proceed and will not include a traditional ammunition ban.

Earlier today, the Iowa Natural Resources Commission gave final approval to the establishment of a dove season to begin on September 1. However, the Commission felt it necessary to add an amendment that will now ban the use of traditional ammunition when dove hunting.

Ban on Lead Shot Proposed By Iowa Natural Resources Commission

Iowa’s Natural Resources Commission recently announced its intent to ban hunters’ use of lead shot on numerous state and federal wildlife areas across Iowa, except for use in turkey and deer hunting. The ban will also prohibit the use of lead shot in target shooting.
