NICS checks increased 53 percent during the three-month period of November 2012 through January 2013, as compared to the same three months a year earlier, according to the FBI.
The surge in checks followed President Obama's re-election, his announcement that gun control--including a ban on magazines that hold 11 or more rounds; a ban on "assault weapons"; and a ban on private sales of firearms, even between family members, friends, neighbors and other acquaintances--would be a "central issue" of his last term in office.
The Associated Press noted that in January, the number of checks was 10 percent lower than in December, and concluded that the decrease was due to the fact that gun stores' inventories have been bought out and the stores have little left to sell. On the other hand, AP pointed out, this year's 10 percent December-to-January decrease was the lowest on record. A year earlier, the one-month decrease was 26 percent.
No doubt, Americans' gun control-defying gun-magazine-and-ammo-buying surge is still underway. No matter what type of gun or magazine President Obama, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and other gun control supporters want to ban, Americans are buying them at a record pace. That's something for anti-gun politicians to think about the next time they think about claiming--as many of them have been doing--that the American people support their goal of turning the Second Amendment into a footnote in American history.
