S. 1702: Promoting Target Ranges
10/01/09 - The expansion of America’s urban and suburban areas has crowded out many shooting areas and made it increasingly difficult to find a place to shoot. On September 24, 2009, Senators Mark Udall (R-Colo.) and James Risch (D-Idaho) introduced S. 1702, a bill that would help remedy this problem by promoting the construction and maintenance of target ranges on public lands.

"Mayors Against Illegal Guns"
09/22/09 - Michael Bloomberg and Thomas Menino, two of the most virulently anti-gun politicians in America, were the creators of “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” (MAIG) and they are still the driving force behind the group. But do not be fooled by the name: this group would be better named Mayors Against Guns.

S. 843: Lautenberg Trying Again To Regulate Gun Shows
06/08/09 - Sen. Frank Lautenberg has once again introduced legislation to regulate gun shows. And as before, it calls for massive new government powers to register gun show customers, register gun owners, retain information on gun sales that take place at gun shows, heavily tax both gun collectors and gun sales, and require gun show promoters to police gun show customers, as if they were agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Gun Owner Blacklist Bill Introduced in U.S. House
05/21/09 - On April 29, U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, who calls himself "a strong supporter of the war against international terrorism, both at home and abroad," introduced H.R. 2159, calling it the "Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009."

05/11/09 - Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) have introduced S. 941, the “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act of 2009.” Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa) and Zack Space (D-Ohio) have introduced a companion bill in the House. The bills would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the firearms arena. These bipartisan bills are a vital step to modernize and improve BATFE operations.

H.R. 2324: Worse than S. 843?
05/11/09 - The Castle gun show bill (H.R. 2324) shares many unacceptable provisions with S. 843, but in key areas goes even further. Despite changes from the Lautenberg juvenile justice amendment of 1999 that it is based on, this bill fails to address gun owners' most significant concerns--and in several areas is even more restrictive than Lautengberg's current bill, S. 843.

Right-to-Carry 2009
05/07/09 - There are 40 Right-to-Carry states. Thirty-six have "shall issue" laws, requiring that carry permits be issued to applicants who meet uniform standards established by the state legislature. Three have fairly-administered discretionary-issue carry permit systems. Vermont respects the right to carry without a permit. Alaska, one of the "shall issue" states, has its permit system for the purpose of permit reciprocity1 with other states, and has allowed carrying without a permit since 2003. Of the 10 non-RTC states, eight have restrictively-administered discretionary-issue systems, and two -- Illinois and Wisconsin -- have no permit system and prohibit carrying.

Congress granted a limited amnesty in 1968, but most veterans did not receive enough notice to participate.

S. 1702: Promoting Target Ranges

11/07/08 - Gun shows are large, public events that for many decades have been held in convention centers and banquet halls, attended by gun enthusiasts, hunters, target shooters, law enforcement and military personnel, and their families. Under federal law, firearm dealers—persons engaged in the business of selling firearms for profit on a regular basis—are required to conduct background checks on anyone to whom they sell any firearm, regardless of where the sale takes place. Federal law also provides that a person who is not a dealer may sell a firearm from his personal collection without conducting a check.

H.R. 442, the "Veterans' Heritage Firearms Act”
08/18/08 - The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the right to keep and bear arms. But his real record, based on votes taken, political associations, and long standing positions, shows that Barack Obama is a serious threat to Second Amendment liberties. Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career.

H.R. 1074 The Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act
07/15/08 - On June 26, the Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment—"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"— protects a purely individual right, as do the First, Fourth and Ninth Amendments.

The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Bill
06/26/08 - On June 26, 2008, the Supreme Court affirmed, in a 5-4 decision, the ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Parker v. District of Columbia (re-cast as District of Columbia v. Heller before the Supreme Court), that the Second Amendment protects a pre-existing, private, individually-held right, to keep arms and to bear arms, without regard to a person’s relationship to a militia. Highlights of the majority opinion, written by Justice Antonin Scalia and joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, and Clarence Thomas, follow:

Firearm Safety Summary
02/27/08 - American Shooters and Hunters Association (AHSA) was created with the specific intent to provide political cover for anti-gun politicians by allowing them to claim support from a “sportsmen’s” group. AHSA would be more correctly called the “American Association for the Protection of Anti-Gun Politicians.” No gun owner or sportsman should fall prey to its carefully crafted lies and deceptions.

Semi-Automatic Firearms and the “Assault Weapon” Issue
02/12/08 - In 1974, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) said that the "manufacture and sale of handguns should be terminated. Existing handguns should be acquired by the states."

On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama
02/06/08 - Every year since 1997, Brady Campaign has pretended to “grade” the states, with states that have the least gun control getting the fewest points, based upon Brady’s presumption that less gun control means more crime.

The Second Amendment
01/25/08 - "Encoded Ammunition" (Bullet and Cartridge Case Serialization) Means:* Forfeiture of Currently-Owned Ammunition
* A Separate Registration for Every Box of New Ammunition
* Outrageously Expensive Ammunition Costs for Police & Private Citizens Alike
*A Waste of Taxpayer Money, Better Spent on Traditional Police Programs

Highlights From The Heller Decision
10/29/07 - On October 13, Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, signed AB1471 into law. As of January 1, 2010, the law will define (and prohibit the sale of) any newly-designed semi-automatic pistol as an “unsafe handgun,” unless the pistol is equipped with two or more internal parts that imprint, onto the cartridge case of a fired round of ammunition, a microscopic array of characters that identify the make, model and serial number of the pistol. Despite claims by the bill’s supporters that it benefits police efforts, it wasn’t supported by statewide police groups.

Active National Pro-Firearms Organizations
10/24/07 - Based on incidents that are newsworthy mainly because they’re so rare, some anti-gun politicians have called for new restrictions on antique guns, replicas of antiques, and new guns that work like antiques. These guns are almost never used in crime, and are mainly owned by collectors, target shooters, and hunters who enjoy these guns’ history and the unique shooting challenges they present.

Firearm Fact Card 2008
10/19/07 - The number of privately owned guns in the U.S. is at an all-time high, and rises by about 4.5 million per year.

National Academy of Sciences Says a “Ballistic Imaging” Database “Should Not Be Established”

With no way to call for help, and police unable to respond, honest citizens were able to defend themselves and their neighbors against looters, arsonists and other criminals.

H.R. 4900: The “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act of 2007”
10/05/07 - Some opponents of the “NICS Improvement Amendments Act” (H.R. 2640) have spent the last several months painting a picture of the bill that would rightly terrify gun owners--if it was true.

Though Violent Crime is at an Historic Low
06/12/07 - On March 9, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled, in Parker v. District of Columbia, that gun control laws imposed by the D.C. City Council, prohibiting possession of a handgun, and prohibiting keeping any gun assembled and loaded at home (the condition required for self-defense), are unconstitutional.

"Encoded Ammunition"/Bullet Serialization
04/02/07 - The National Rifle Association has always supported including the records of individuals adjudicated mentally defective into the National Instant Background Check System. We believe that the NICS should serve the intent of Congress, which is to prohibit the sale of firearms to criminals and other prohibited persons, such as adjudicated mental defectives. However, we must not forget that the NICS also serves the purpose of clearing firearm purchases by law-abiding Americans. Too often, the system has been abused and has not delivered on the promise of a fair and instant check.

"Micro-Stamping": Incremental Gun Prohibition Advances in California
  03/30/07 - A summary of pro-gun legislation in the 110th Congress.

Anti-Gunners’ New Target: Antique and Replica Guns

Mark Souder (R-Ind.) and in the Senate by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.), would end D.C.’s prohibition on using guns for self-defense in one’s home and conform other D.C. gun laws to federal laws, while retaining stiff penalties for illegal gun possession and gun crimes. It would do none of the things claimed by anti-gun groups.

Firearm Safety In America 2009
03/20/07 - On March 9, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled (in Parker v. District of Columbia) that certain gun control laws imposed by the D.C. City Council are unconstitutional. The laws prohibit the possession of a handgun, and the use of any gun for defense against violent criminals who invade a person's home. The court agreed with the Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Justice Department, the Framers of the Bill of Rights, and constitutional scholars past and present, that the Second Amendment protects a pre-existing right of individuals, not a so-called "right" of a state to maintain a select militia, or a privilege to have guns only when serving in a select militia. The court also ruled that individuals have a right to possess handguns.

Guarantees Of The Right To Arms In State Constitutions
02/28/07 - Senator Charles Schumer, (D-N.Y.) has introduced S. 77, the "Anti-Gun Trafficking Penalties Enhancement Act of 2007." A more appropriate title would be the "Firearms Dealer Harassment Act." S. 77 directly threatens federal firearms license holders (FFLs) and gun buyers.

Senators Conrad and Roberts, Rep`s. Pomeroy and Moran, Introduce "Open Fields Initiative" Bills
02/07/07 - The Castle gun show bill (H.R. 96) masquerades as reform—imposing bureaucratic restrictions aimed at shutting down gun shows--without fixing real problems of the National Instant Check System (NICS). Despite changes from the Lautenberg juvenile justice amendment of 1999 that it is based on, this bill fails to address gun owners’ most significant concerns--and in several areas is even more restrictive than the failed Lautenberg amendment.

D.C.’s Gun Bans Ruled Unconstitutional
02/06/07 - If there is one thing that threatens the future of hunting more than any other, it is the challenge of finding a place to hunt. More and more hunting land is being lost, either through development or because of restrictive regulations that preclude its use. Concerned hunters working together with NRA-ILA have found a solution: protect our public hunting lands with No-Net-Loss laws.

H.R. 297/NICS Improvement
01/25/07 - For more than five years, cities suing the gun industry and anti-gun organizations have sought access to confidential law enforcement data on firearms traces. Pro-Gun Legislation in the 110th Congress
12/16/06 - Anti-gun proposals at the federal level receive the most attention, but similar proposals and restrictive ordinances at the local level also threaten honest gun owners` rights and the fundamental American principle of equal protection under the law for all citizens.

The Case For Reforming The District of Columbia`s Gun Laws
07/27/06 - In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the citizens of New Orleans lost their right to defend themselves from thugs and looters when law enforcement systematically confiscated legally owed firearms from those who were trying to protect themselves, their families and their property. To ensure this never happens again, the passage of S. 2599/H.R. 5013, the “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006,” is a top NRA-ILA legislative priority.

Federal Court of Appeals Rules That D.C. Gun Control Laws Violate Second Amendment
07/26/06 - H.R. 3436/S. 1488 would require that the President of the United States each year certify to Congress that the U.N. has taken no action to “restrict, attempt to restrict, or otherwise adversely infringe upon the rights of individual in the United States to possess a firearm or ammunition, including the imposition of a tax that will interfere with the right to own a firearm or ammunition.”

McCarthy Bill Bans Millions More Guns Than The Infamous Clinton Gun Ban
03/24/06 - It is common practice among legitimate researchers to give their peers access to data used in their studies, so that other researchers can review both the data and the methodology used in their analysis. Without such “peer review,"study" findings typically are not assumed to be valid. Many scholarly journals will not even publish an article summarizing the results of a study until the data and methodology have been peer reviewed.

S. 77: The Firearms Dealer Harassment Act
02/15/06 - Should people who lawfully possess firearms be able to leave them locked in their motor vehicles, on business property? Common sense would say, "yes."

The Castle Gun Show Restriction Bill: Worse than Lautenberg?
02/08/06 - Finding a place to hunt is one of the biggest concerns of hunters and NRA-ILA is actively working on multiple fronts to promote solutions to this growing problem. One such solution is called "Open Fields."

No-Net-Loss: Ensuring Future Generations A Place To Hunt
02/06/06 - "Law is order, and good law is good order,"Aristotle said. Without doubt, Florida's recently enacted "Castle Doctrine" law is good law, casting a common-sense light onto the debate over the right of self-defense. It reverses the pendulum that for too long has swung in the direction of protecting the rights of criminals over the rights of their victims. Despite predictable howling from the anti-gun media elite that Florida was taking an unprecented and dangerous action, in truth it joined 24 other states that reject "duty-to-retreat" laws.

The "Tiahrt Amendment" on Firearms Traces: Protecting Gun Owners' Privacy and Law Enforcement Safety
11/14/05 - Fresh from its defeat in Brazil, the UN is renewing its efforts to enact additional laws governing the control of firearms by law-abiding citizens.

Firearms Preemption Laws
11/01/05 - On October 26, 2005, President Bush signed S. 397, the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act." Introduced by Sens. Larry Craig (R-ID) and Max Baucus (D-MT), this legislation is a vitally important first step toward ending the anti-gun lobby`s shameless attempts to bankrupt the American firearms industry through reckless lawsuits. Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and Rick Boucher (D-VA) introduced similar legislation, H.R. 800 in the House of Representatives.

S. 2599/H.R. 5013: Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006
  10/02/05 -

H.R. 3436/S. 1488 The “Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005”
  08/29/05 -

The NOT Sweet 16
08/26/05 - "The circumstances of workplace homicides differ substantially from those portrayed by the media and from homicides in the general population. For the most part, workplace homicides are not the result of disgruntled workers who take out their frustrations on co-workers or supervisors, or of intimate partners and other relatives who killed loved ones in the course off a dispute; rather, they are mostly robbery-related crimes." --National Institute for Occupational Safety And Health

H.R. 1384: The Firearms Commerce Modernization Act
08/23/05 - NRA has undertaken the effort to protect gun owners' rights in their workplaces by fighting efforts by employers to ban firearms, including firearms locked in private vehicles in employee parking lots. This has generated the predictable response from the anti-gun community, with claims of workplace horrors assigned to firearms and "studies" that purport to show firearms are a threat to workplace safety. Careful examinations of these studies reveal both bias in their source material and serious flaws in their methodology.

Does Anti-Gun Researcher David Hemenway Have Something To Hide?
08/14/05 - The status or disposition of lawsuits brought by state and local governments against lawful firearms businesses.

Parking Lot Gun Laws and the Right to Transport Firearms

Joe Dunn and Senate President pro tem Don Perata held a press conference announcing the introduction of SB 357, a bill to mandate that all handgun ammunition carry a unique serial number engraved on the casing of each cartridge and on the bottom of every bullet. During this conference, Lockyer made a number of claims in support of the bill that are not supported by the facts. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, Inc. responded to those claims, and provided important insight into the real impact of this ill-conceived legislation.

Providing Increased Access To Hunting Lands Through "Open Fields
04/25/05 - The leaders of the House Judiciary Committee`s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security--Reps. Howard Coble (R-N.C.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) have joined forces to introduce H.R. 5092, the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) Modernization and Reform Act of 2006." This bipartisan bill is a critical first step toward reforming BATFE.

Fortifying The Right To Self-Defense
  03/18/05 -

U.N. Gun Control Document
03/14/05 - In the early days of America, so-called blue laws restricted many activities on Sunday. In recent years, however, state governments have recognized that the people`s right to choose for themselves what they do, or don`t do, on Sunday is more consistent with America`s founding principals. Present day bans on Sunday hunting are the last holdouts of these blue laws, and hunters are questioning why they are being treated differently from their fellow citizens.

"Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act"
03/09/05 - Anti-gun groups and Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) are making far-fetched claims about crimes they believe might be committed with .50 caliber rifles.1 Urged on by such speculations, CBS and CNN recently aired unbalanced, irresponsible stories portraying the rifles as "too dangerous to be in the hands of private citizens" and "a clear and present danger to the public safety."

Guide To Interstate Right-To-Carry Reciprocity And Recognition
03/09/05 - Given the large number of lies that anti-gun groups and politicians have told over the years, we hesitate to say that this is the most dishonest and deceptive thing we have ever heard from them. But what they are saying about Fabrique Nationale`s Five-seveN pistol is among the most dishonest and deceptive to date.

Sponsor’s Arguments for Proposition H And NRA's Response
03/09/05 - Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) is one of the most irrationally anti-gun members of the U.S. House of Representatives. For example, in 1993, when the House voted 424-4 to require a law enforcement agency to explain to a person why it rejected that person's handgun purchase under the former federal waiting period law, Moran was one of the four who voted against the measure. In Moran's mind, anyone who wants to buy a gun doesn't deserve to be treated fairly.

The Reality of "Workplace Homicides"
  03/01/05 -

The Truth About "Workplace Homicides"
02/24/05 - U.S. Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald represents California`s 37th Congressional District, in Los Angeles County. According to her website, Glamour magazine-a stridently anti-gun publication-has named her "one of eleven women who will change the world."

Taxpayer Funded Reckless Lawsuits Against The Firearms Industry
01/18/05 - With the demise of the Clinton Gun Ban, and several independent studies for the federal government showing that the "assault weapons" ban was ill-conceived, gun prohibitionists have found new firearms to demonize--those chambered to fire the vintage .50 BMG cartridge.

Lockyer, Dunn and Perata Misrepresent Their Bullet Registration Scheme
01/18/05 - Established in 1975, the Institute for Legis-lative Action (ILA) is the "lobbying" arm of the National Rifle Association of America.
