Last Friday, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) approved the establishment of a sandhill crane hunting season. Over the last three decades, the population of the sandhill crane has grown more than 300% to the point where hunters in fifteen states (AK, AZ, CO, ID, KS, KY, MN, MT, ND, NM, OK, SD, TX, UT, WY) currently enjoy being able to participate in the hunting and proper management of this abundant species. Now, sportsmen in Tennessee will be able to enjoy this same opportunity beginning on November 28 through January 1, 2014.
The TFWC held public hearings last week on creation of this inaugural season. After proponents and opponents of this hunting season made their case, the TFWC unanimously approved the season. Starting on November 28, sandhill crane hunting will be allowed daily from sunrise to 3:00 p.m. Hunters will be limited to the taking of three birds, with 400 permits available. To receive a valid permit, hunters must pass a crane identification test. Details for the drawing of these permits will be released at a later date.
