The US Fish and Wildlife Service has released a plan that will guide management of the Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and the Carlton Pond Waterfowl Production Area for the next fifteen years. The planning area is located in Penobscot, Kennebec, and Waldo Counties.
The plan offers two management alternatives to Alternative A, current management. All provide for hunting opportunities. The NRA encourages the hunting community to review the plan and submit comments. It is extremely helpful that the public record show support for hunting as the anti-hunters continue to advocate closure of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the individual refuges, like Sunkhaze Meadows, to hunting.
The draft plan can be reviewed here. For further information, please call Refuge Manager Beth Goettel at 207-594-0600.
Public comments are being accepted until May 31st. To email comments please click here. In addition, please include “Sunkhaze Meadows NWR and Carlton Pond WPA Draft CCP” in the subject line of the comments.
