Michelle Horton was asleep in the North Port, Fla. home where she lives with her two sons, when she was awakened by the family dog. Horton got up to investigate and spotted a burglar inside the home. After retrieving a gun, Horton followed the criminal to the back yard, where she confronted the man and his waiting accomplice. One of the burglars ran upon seeing the gun, but the other refused to leave. Horton warned the intruder twice, before firing a shot that struck the criminal in the leg and caused him to flee.
In an interview with local media, Horton had encouraging words for women seeking to exercise their right to self-defense, stating, “I know a lot of women say, ‘Oh no, I’m too scared to shoot him.’ But when you’re threatened, you won’t be so scared.” Horton also had a warning for the intruders should they try to come back, noting, “This time he won’t get wounded. This time will be for real.” (WINK, Fort Myers, Fla. 06/05/12)
