Three armed men entered Okay Tire Service in Miami, Fla. and attempted to rob owner Omar Rangel and three of his employees. As the thieves were collecting the employees wallets and cell phones, Rangel drew a gun from his front pocket and fired at the criminals, striking one criminal in the chest and another in the kneecap. The robber with the chest wound was taken to a local hospital where he was soon joined by the criminal who had been struck in the kneecap. The third criminal fled the scene. Local residents and police showed support for Rangel’s right to self-defense, with one officer stating that Rangel “had the roots of a warrior” and “displayed tombstone courage.”
