NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT: Vol. 20, No. 28 07/19/2013
A few days after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was busy exploiting the trial outcome by attacking "stand‑your‑ground" self-defense laws. As reported by Fox News, during a speech at the NAACP's annual convention, Holder said, "Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation's attention, it's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods." In response to Holder's remarks, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox had this to say: "The attorney general fails to understand that self-defense is not a concept, it's a fundamental human right. To send a message that legitimate self-defense is to blame is unconscionable, and demonstrates once again that this administration will exploit tragedies to push their political agenda."

On Wednesday, July 17, the House Appropriations Committee approved the Fiscal Year 2014 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill following several votes on amendments of consequence to gun owners. In recent days, the debate over self-defense laws and the addition of Illinois as the 50th state to adopt a law offering citizens some process for exercising their Right-to-Carry have grabbed headlines. But while these issues soaked up public attention, NRA-ILA was hard at work in the halls of Congress defending existing protections against the federal abuse of gun owners and ensuring new gun controls were defeated.
Back in February, we reported on Vice President Joe Biden's ill-advised "advice" that those who have to protect their homes and families from intruders should just walk outside and fire "two blasts" from a double-barreled shotgun. At the time, a FoxNews.com article reported that Biden claims to keep two shotguns locked up at his home, and that he has told his wife, Jill, to use them if she needs protection: "Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony ... take that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house."
In yet another move to advance the gun control agenda of President Barack Obama and billionaire anti-gun Mayor Michael Bloomberg, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) is taking his betrayal of gun owners to the next level. Early next week, Manchin will be the guest of honor at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser hosted by Mayor Bloomberg at his opulent Manhattan mansion, as he continues to misrepresent his failed legislation.
