Illinois: Cook County Considering Two Anti-Gun Proposals!

Friday, December 14, 2007

Cook County is currently considering two proposals that are all out assaults on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

The first, which is called the Safe Streets/Weapons Registration Ordinance, would require the registration of all firearms and firearm owners in Cook County.  As written, however, it is an outright ban of all firearms.  The ordinance also prohibits transporting a firearm in your vehicle within Cook County unless the firearm is "broken down in a nonfunctioning state."  How, exactly, do you easily break down a revolver to a "nonfunctioning state"?  And if you are transporting a hunting rifle that has been carefully sighted in, breaking it down is likely to erase all of your hard work.  Ammunition possession would also become illegal, as individuals are required to possess "a valid registration certificate for a firearm of the same gauge or caliber as the ammunition possessed" in order to comply with the new ordinance.  But if all firearms are banned, they cannot be registered, and you cannot have a qualifying registration certificate.

The other proposed ordinance would amend the county's "Deadly Weapon Dealers Ordinance."  It seeks to completely ban all gun shows within the county, and prohibits federally licensed dealers from operating within 10 miles of another federally licensed dealer.  Cook County requires a firearms dealer to be licensed not only federally, but also by the County.  Thus, no new dealers within 10 miles of each other.  How this would be applied to existing dealers is unclear, however, as the current ordinance states that a County license is revoked if the dealer "fails to comply with any provision of this article."  Existing within the new 10-mile zone would appear to be a violation, but whether all dealers within the zone will now have their licenses revoked, or if it will be based on whoever was there first or some other factor, is not spelled out.  Both of these proposed ordinances must be defeated!

There is currently no timetable set for when either will be taken up for consideration, so please contact the Cook County Board of Commissioners immediately and urge them to oppose these attacks on the Second Amendment.  Contact information can be found below.
