Update On Sotomayor Nomination

Friday, July 24, 2009

As we reported last week, NRA has announced its opposition to the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the position of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Subsequent to that announcement, this week, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, and NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox sent a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and all members of the U.S. Senate giving notice that NRA-ILA will be scoring Senators based on their vote.

The letter said, in part, "We believe any individual who does not agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right and who does not respect our God-given right of self-defense should not serve on any court, much less the highest court in the land.  Given the importance of this issue, the vote on Judge Sotomayor's confirmation will be considered in NRA's future candidate evaluations."
