Crime Statistics

The files below -- for the U.S., the 50 states, and the District of Columbia -- contain annual statistics for total, serious, violent, and property crimes and incarcerations. (Sources: FBI and Bureau of Justice Statistics) Included are numbers, rates, and trends (one year to next, and any year to present), and crime percentages, charts showing violent crime trends, and a chart comparing trends in violent crime and incarceration. You can use our Trend Calculator (Excel format) to calculate additional trends.

For your convenience, the statistics are provided in Excel and CSV spreadsheet formats. The CSV files, while usable by any spreadsheet software, do not contain the charts. Also, please be aware that CSV files often automatically place a zero as the second number to the right of the decimal (for example, 5.60), so disregard any such zero you see in these files.

Our Crime 1960-present (Excel format, 780 kb, CSV format here, 300kb) and Crime Rankings 1960-present (Excel format, 1.2 MB, CSV format here, 460kb) present the number and rate data for the entire country.

To save a file, right-click on the file name and select "Save Target As". Then select the location where you wish to save the file and click "Save".
