VOTER REGISTRATION
All U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 years of age by Election Day, have resided in the state for at least 30 days, and are not under felony conviction, are eligible to vote in Texas. To register, complete and return a voter registration application form, which is available at your local post office, libraries, Department of Motor Vehicles and some state agencies, and online at www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/. Your spouse, parent, or child (acting as an agent) may also complete and sign a voter registration application for you, provided that this person is a registered voter, or has applied for voter registration.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To vote absentee, appear in person at your County Clerks office. To vote by mail, submit a written request for an absentee ballot to the early voting clerk. Be sure to include your name, address (where you are registered to vote and where you would like the ballot mailed), reason why you need to vote absentee, and your signature. You may apply for an early ballot by mail up to 60 days prior to the election, but no later than 7 days before the election. Early voting in person starts 17 days before the election and closes 4 days before election day.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS Texas has an open primary election system, meaning that all registered voters may vote in either of the party's primaries, but not in more than one. After voting in a party's primary election, you are automatically enrolled in that party, and thus, will remain affiliated until the end of the calendar year. When requesting an absentee ballot for the primary election, you must indicate which party's ballot you need.
