TENNESSEE - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

Any U.S. citizen who will be at least 18 years of age before Election Day, is a resident of the Tennessee, and is not disenfranchised by a criminal violation, is eligible to register to vote in Tennessee. You may complete a registration form at the Department of Motor Vehicles or at your local County Election Commission office. You may also make an application for voter registration by mail. These forms may be obtained from the County Election Commission Office, the post office and at various other public buildings. If you are ill or have some other valid reason, arrangements can be made for the County Election Commission to provide for registration to take place at your home.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To vote absentee in person, go to your County Election Commission Office as early as 20 days prior to an election, but no later than five days before the election. To vote absentee by mail, you must make a request to the County Election Commission as early as 90 days prior to an election and no later than 7 days before the election. Once the request is received, the County Election Commission will mail you an application. This completed application must be returned to the Commission no later than 5 days before the election. A ballot will then be mailed to you. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be returned to the Commission by the closing of the polls on Election Day.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Tennessee has an open primary election system, meaning all registered voters may vote in either of the party primaries, but not in more than one. When voting absentee, be sure to specify which party ballot you require.
