SOUTH DAKOTA - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, are residents of South Dakota, and are not under felony conviction, are eligible to register to vote in South Dakota. You may register at your County Auditor's office, city finance office, the Department of Motor Vehicles, or any notary public authorized by a county auditor. You may also obtain a mail-in voter registration form from the county auditor and offices of public assistance.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! Absentee ballots are available six weeks prior to the election. To receive an absentee ballot, file a written application for an absentee ballot with your County Auditor. The application may be a letter, which must include your voting precinct name or number, reason why you will be voting absentee, the election for which you're requesting the absentee ballot, and your signature. You may use one application to apply for absentee ballots for all primary and general elections. No applications will be accepted after 3:00 p.m., on Election Day, and all completed ballots must be returned to the auditor's office in time to be delivered to the appropriate polling place prior to the close of the polls. You may also vote absentee in person at the County Auditor's office.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

South Dakota hosts closed primary elections, which means that only voters who are registered with a particular party may vote in the primary election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are affiliated. Independent voters are ineligible to vote in the primary election.
