Oregon - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

Any United States citizen, who is at least 18 years of age, is a resident of Oregon, and is not incarcerated under felony conviction, is eligible to register to vote in Oregon. Residents may register to vote in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles or at the county elections office. They may also register through mail-in registration cards, which are available at various county and state agencies, some banks, and post offices.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

For all elections the ballots are mailed by the County Elections Officials to each active voter in their district no sooner than 18 days and no later than 14 days before the date of the election. Long term and military absentee ballots (including all out of country ballots) are mailed 45 days before the election. Out of state voters that are not long term absentee voters have their ballots mailed no sooner than the 29th day before an election. Completed ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m., on Election Day. You may apply for absentee voter status if you live out of state or if you know that you will be absent for an election you wish to vote in. You may obtain an absentee voter application from your County Elections Office.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Oregon hosts a closed primary system, which means only voters who are registered with a particular party may vote in the primary election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are affiliated. Oregon state election law allows parties hosting primary elections to open their primaries to unaffiliated voters, which the Democratic party alone has chosen to do thus far.
FOR MORE INFORMATION

For additional information on the elections, please contact the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division at 503/986-1518. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 503/587-9233, or your State Democratic Party at 503/224-8200.
