VOTER REGISTRATION All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old, are residents of New Mexico, and have no felony convictions, are eligible to register to vote. To register in person, appear at the Department of Motor Vehicles or at your County Clerk's office, which is usually located at your County Courthouse. To register by mail, complete and return a voter registration form, which is available at public libraries, post offices, Department of Motor Vehicles, and various state agencies.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To obtain your absentee ballot by mail, contact your County Clerk's office anytime beginning 45 days prior to Election Day, but no later than 12 days prior to Election Day. Once you receive your ballot, complete and return it no later than five days prior to Election Day. You can also vote absentee in person at your County Clerk's office during the 40-day period prior to an election.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS New Mexico hosts a closed primary system, which means that only voters who are registered with a particular party can vote in the primary election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are affiliated. Independent voters are ineligible to vote in the primary election.
