Montana - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens, who are at least 18 years of age, have resided in the state for at least 30 days, and are not under felony conviction, are eligible to register to vote in Montana. To register by mail, complete and return a voter registration card to the Election Administrator of your county. Mail-in voter registration cards are available at local libraries, post offices, local county elections office, the Secretary of State's office, and in some phone books. You can also register in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To vote absentee by mail, send a written request for an absentee ballot to your county's election administrator, usually located at City Hall, as early as 75 days prior to an election. Include your name, address (both where you are registered to vote and where you want your ballot mailed), the election in which you wish to vote, and your signature. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be received before the polls close on Election Day. You can also vote absentee in person at your county courthouse beginning 45 days prior to an election.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Montana has an open primary system, meaning that all registered voters are eligible to vote in either one of the party primaries, but not in more than one. When voting absentee in a primary election, you must state which party's ballot you wish to receive.
