Minnesota - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens, who will be at least 18 years of age by Election Day, are residents of the state for at least 20 days, and are not under felony conviction, are eligible to register to vote in Minnesota. To register, complete a registration card and submit it in person or by mail to your county auditor or to the Secretary of State's office. Voter registration cards are available at public libraries and most city, county and state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles. Minnesota also allows its residents to register to vote at the polls on Election Day. Be sure to bring a valid form of identification, such as driver's license, college student identification, or any other document approved by the Secretary of State's office as proper identification. You may also have a registered voter vouch for you.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To obtain an absentee ballot, call or write your County Auditor and request an absentee ballot. Depending on the county, you may receive an actual absentee ballot or an application for an absentee ballot. If you receive an application, complete and return it as soon as possible and the county will send you an absentee ballot. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be received prior to Election Day.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Minnesota has an open primary system, meaning that all registered voters may vote in either one of the party primaries, but not in more than one. When requesting an absentee ballot for a primary election, be sure to specify the ballot of your choice.
