VOTER REGISTRATION All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, have resided in the state for at least 30 days, and are not incarcerated under felony conviction, are eligible to register to vote in Michigan. To register in person, appear at the office of your city/township clerk's office or at the Department of Motor Vehicles. To register by mail, send in a completed mail-in form, which is available at public libraries or through your City or County Clerk's Office, or online. Voters that register by mail, however, may not vote absentee in their first election. You must register to vote 30 days before the election.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To obtain your absentee ballot, which are available 75 days prior to election day, write your City or Township Clerk's office to request an absentee ballot. It must be in writing and must include one of the six statutory reasons you'll be unavailable to vote on Election Day: age 60 years or older; unable to vote without assistance at the polls; expecting to be out of town on election day; in jail awaiting arraignment or trial; unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons; appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of your precinct of residence. Requests to have an absentee voter ballot mailed to you must be submitted to your clerk no later than 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election. After receiving the ballot, you have until 8 p.m. on Election Day to complete the ballot and return it to the clerk's office. You may also vote absentee in person at the Township or County Clerk's office beginning three weeks prior to an election and ending at 4:00 p.m., the day before the election. All absentee ballots must be received by the Township or County Clerk's office no later than 8:00 p.m., on Election Day.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS Michigan has an open primary system, which allows all registered voters to vote in the primary election. Voters are presented with a blanket ballot that includes the names of all official candidates, but voters cannot cross party lines, meaning that all their votes must be cast for candidates of one particular party.
