Louisiana - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age and residents of the state are eligible to register to vote in Louisiana. To register by mail, complete and return a mail-in voter registration application card, which is available at many county and state agencies, such as state public social services offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles. You can also register to vote in person at the office of the registrar or deputy registrar of your parish.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know that you will be unable to get to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! In order to vote absentee, you must complete and return an absentee voter application form. To obtain the application form, call or write your local Parish Voter Registrar, and an application will be mailed to you. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be returned by mail no later than 96 hours before the polls close for the scheduled election. If completing a mailed application and returning in person, the ballot must be returned at least one day prior to elections. You may also vote absentee in person at your Parish registrar's office from 12 to 6 days prior to any scheduled election. Be sure to contact your Parish registrar's office for specific details.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Louisiana has an open primary election system, which means that all registered voters can vote in the primary election. All voters are presented with a blanket ballot, which includes the names of all official candidates. Voters may then vote for any candidate, regardless of party affiliation. Any candidate that receives more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary election is exempt from the general election and is automatically elected. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, regardless of party affiliation, the top two vote-getters advance to a run-off election held at a later date. Any uncontested candidate is automatically elected at the end of the official candidate qualifying term.
