Kansas - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, are residents of the state, and have no felony convictions, are eligible to register to vote in Kansas. To register by mail, complete and return a mail-in a voter registration application card, which is available at post offices, public libraries, and many county and state offices, such as the County Clerk's office. You can also register in person at your County Clerk's office or at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting Absentee! Kansas has Absentee or "Advanced Voting," available for all registered voters so that you can vote from home, by mail or in person before Election Day. To request an "Advanced" ballot, contact your County Election Officer for an application. You can have your ballot mailed to you starting 20 days before the election. You may vote in person in the county election office starting the Tuesday before Election Day, or up to 20 days before the election, depending on the county. All ballots must be received in the county election office by the close of polls on Election day. Sick, disabled, or illiterate voters may receive assistance in applying for and casting advance voting ballots.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Kansas has a closed primary election system, which means that only voters who are registered with a particular party can vote in the primary election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are affiliated. Independents are ineligible to vote in the primary election.
FOR MORE INFORMATION

For additional information on the elections, please call the Kansas Secretary of State at 785/296-4561. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 785/234-3456, or your State Democratic Party at 785/234-0425.
