Illinois - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens, who are at least 18 years of age, have resided in the state for at least 30 days, and are not incarcerated under felony conviction, are eligible to register to vote in Illinois. You can register in person at your County Clerk's Office, local Board of Elections Commission, the Department of Motor Vehicles, or with a deputy voter registrar. When registering in person, be sure to bring along two forms of identification, at least one of which must document your current address. Mail-in voter registration forms are available at offices of public assistance, offices of deputy registrars, and many county and state agencies. If you register by mail, however, you are ineligible to vote absentee in your first election.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot. To obtain an absentee ballot by mail, contact the County Clerk or Board of Election Commissioners not more than 40 days before the election. Once you have completed the absentee ballot, be sure to return it to the County Clerk's office no later than the day of the election.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Illinois hosts an open primary election system, meaning all registered voters may vote in either of the party primaries, but not more than one. When requesting an absentee ballot for a primary election, be sure to specify the primary of your choice.
FOR MORE INFORMATION

For additional information on the elections, please contact the Illinois State Board of Elections at 217/782-4141. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 312/201-9000, or your State Democratic Party at 217/546-7404.
