Iowa - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 years of age by Election Day, have resided in the state for at least 10 days, and do not have any felony convictions, are eligible to register to vote in Iowa. To register by mail, simply mail in a completed voter registration application form, which is available at post offices, in telephone books, and many county and state offices. You can also register in person at the County Auditor's office or the Department of Motor Vehicles.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! You may vote absentee by appearing at the County Auditor's office during regular business hours, beginning not more than 70 days prior to an election, and/or as soon as ballots are available. To request an absentee ballot by mail, you must send a written request including your full name, the address to which you want the ballot sent, the name or date of the election in which you're voting, and your signature or online through the Iowa Secretary of State's Elections website.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Iowa has a closed primary election system, which means that only voters who are registered with a particular party can vote in the primary election, and they must vote in the primary of the party with which they are affiliated. Unaffiliated voters are ineligible to vote in the primary election.
